当地的县吏对陶渊明说：“迎接督邮刘云，无论如何都要穿戴整齐有礼，要准备好送给他的礼物，要有恭敬虔诚的态度。这样督邮刘云高兴了，我们才不会惹祸上身。”县吏们的做法，陶渊明很不赞同，说到：“我岂能为五斗米而折腰呢!那督邮刘云是何等大人物?根本不值得我为了区区五斗的县令俸禄，委屈自己去奉承贿赂他。”说完当下甩冠离去，心中愤慨难以平复，毅然辞官归隐田居。
